The word wine is derived from a Latin word vinum which means an alcohol beverage made from fruits such as grapes and many more. Ideally, wine is made by fermenting grapes, sugars, water, enzymes and other nutrients.
As a drink, wine has existed for thousands of years. The earliest account of wine can be traced to The Republic of Georgia where wine jars which were over 8,000 years were discovered. In china, the archaeologists discovered pottery jars that were 9,000 years old.
Also, archaeologists believe that the earliest fermention and production of wine from grapes must have taken place at the site of Haiji Firuz and in the Zagos mountains. Besides, wine production is believed to have been fermented in Armenia.
Other than history, it is important to note that different wines were named after the fruit from which they were produced. For instance apple wine is fermented from apple while elderberry wine is made from elderberry. it is prudent to note that different varieties of grapes are used to make different brands of wine. When other fruits are used, they may not make a very good wine because they lack high amount of fermented sugars, have low levels of acidity and contain insufficient yeasts. These are the key nutrients that are required to promote fermentation. Perhaps this is the reason why wine derived from grapes is the best. In fact the best wine comes from regions that are traditionally known to for producing grapes.
Other than the wine produced from fruits, wine can also be made from rice and barley. These are starch based materials that are used to make beer. These drinks are referred to as wine even though they are more of beer than wine. The reason why they are called wine is the alcohol content they have.
